You know when you see a photograph of someone you know but it’s from years before you met them, and it’s like they’re not quite…finished.
OKAY I NEVER NOTICED THIS BEFORE BUT WOW IT HURTS. THE FIRST GIF IS OF TEN AND RIVER. THIS IS THE PART WHERE HE IS TRYING TO GET HER TO TELL HIM WHO SHE IS. TO HIM. AND RIVER OF COURSE WON’T TELL HIM. BUT SHE STILL WANTS HIM TO TRUST HER AND SUBCONSCIOUSLY SHE REACHES OUT TO HIM, TO STRAIGHTEN HIS BOW TIE, LIKE SHE NORMALLY WOULD. EXCEPT IT’S NOT THERE. BECAUSE THIS IS TEN. AND TEN DOESN’T WEAR BOW TIES. AND I THINK THIS IS THE MOMENT WHEN SHE REALIZES THAT THIS MAN, EVEN THOUGH HE IS THE DOCTOR, IS NOT HER DOCTOR. HER DOCTOR WEARS BOW TIES AND THINKS THEM COOL. HER DOCTOR FLIRTS AND FLAILS AROUND HER. THIS MAN IS FREAKED OUT BY THE MERE PRESENCE OF HER. WHO SHE IS. WHO SHE COULD BE. AND I THINK THAT TERRIFIES HER.

I love this, so very very much.
Some people would say something sly and patronizing to this girl, and make all the grown-ups laugh. “Ohhh the weeping angels are sooo scary bla bla blah.” But Matt asks this young lady if she’s scared, and she’s honest, and he sees the seriousness in her - because she believes this stuff, it’s part of her universe! And he goes into that universe with her, and tells her the truth from her perspective. He doesn’t say “It’s all pretend, sweetie, there’s nothing to be scared of,” or “Those silly weeping angels can’t hurt you,” or “The Doctor’s got it covered,” or dismiss her in any way. He steps into her world, and promises her that she’ll be safe in a language that she understands.
In my opinion this is the dictionary definition of respecting someone else’s beliefs. You win, Matt. You win so hard.

#here’s the thing: yes the head writer is different and yes rose is gone and yes the doctor has regenerated #but we the audience also know he’s the same man and he remembers every single companion he’s had #and even lots of the writers are the same#so when eleven said this there is NO WAY the writers didn’t mean for our memories to be tossed back to TIP #they’re far too parallel; they’re so similar one could have followed the other in the same episode #rose is alive and well in the doctor’s mind
#people need to stop trying to tell me to get over rose and that the doctor is over her. #because he will NEVER be over rose. #she fixed him after he was broken from the time war #and he was completely and unequivocally in love with her. #will he love others? does he love others? YES. #but what he had with rose was special. #i don’t think the doctor had ever fallen in love before rose. #you never forget your first love. #he will never forget rose. #but you know what? THAT’S OKAY. #because he will also never forget martha or donna or jack or amy or rory or river #or ace or susan or romana or barbara or ian or ANY of the people he has spent time with. #it’s like he said: ‘my friends have always been the best of me.’ #he believes in rose like he no longer believes in himself. #he believes in all of them.
#YES YES YES #DOCTOR WHO HAS NEVER BEEN ABOUT THE DOCTOR AND MOFFAT DOESN’T GET THAT #I MEAN YEAH HE’S THE CONSTANT #BUT HE HAS NEVER BEEN THE MAIN CHARACTER #THE MOST IMPORTANT CHARACTER HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE COMPANIONS #BECAUSE THEY ARE US #THEY ARE THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE HUMAN RACE #REGULAR PEOPLE JUST LIKE YOU AND ME #AND THEN THE DOCTOR TAKES THEM AND LETS THEM RUN AND THEY BECOME SOMETHING SO AMAZING THAT IT’S BREATHTAKING TO BEHOLD #BECAUSE THAT’S THE POINT OF THE SHOW #NO MATTER WHERE YOU COME FROM OR WHETHER OR NOT YOU HAVE YOUR A LEVELS#YOU ARE STILL MAGNIFICENT #AND SOMETIMES YOU NEED TO BE BELIEVED IN TO SEE IT #THE DOCTOR BELIEVES IN THE HUMAN RACE BECAUSE WE ARE CAPABLE OF GOOD AND GREAT THINGS AND BUT SOMETIMES WE NEED TO BE REMINDED#GOD I MISS THIS SHOW #DOCTOR WHO
